Acute-phase inter-alpha- trypsin inhibitor heavy chain 4 (ITIH4) levels in serum and milk of cows with subclinical mastitis caused by Streptococcus species and coagulase-negative Staphylococcus species.

This study published in the Journal of Dairy Science shows for the first time that ITIH4 concentration increases in the milk of cows with subclinical mastitis.

The aim of the study, carried out in collaboration with the University of Zaragoza and the University of Lublin, was to investigate the concentration of ITIH4 in the serum and milk of cows with subclinical mastitis. A total of 60 animals were included in the study, 20 healthy and 40 with subclinical mastitis caused by Streptococcus spp (STR group, 20 cows) or coagulase-negative Staphylococcus spp (CNS group, 20 cows). 100% of STR animals and 89% of CNS animals had serum levels of ITIH4 above the reference value. The concentration of ITIH4 also increased significantly in the milk of cows with mastitis compared to the healthy group. Mean values were similar for the SRT and CNS groups. Moreover, a correlation was observed between ITIH4 levels and somatic cell count for the total samples analyzed, which was higher for the STR group (r=0.80)..
