Abundance of plasma proteins in response to divergent ratios of dietary ω6:ω3 fatty acids in gestating and lactating sows using a quantitative proteomics approach.
In this study published in the Journal of Proteomics, a proteomic analysis was carried out to evaluate changes in the plasma of sows fed with a low ω6:ω3 fatty acids ratio, which had proven to improve zootechnical performance.
The aim of the study was to investigate the plasma proteomic pattern of sows supplemented with a low ratio of ω6:ω3 fatty acids (4:1), which had previously shown improvements in zootechnical data compared to a control diet (ω6:ω3 ratio 13:1 in gestation and 10:1 in lactation). The study was carried out on 5 plasma samples from each experimental group, obtained at 108 days of gestation and at the end of lactation. The analysis using quantitative proteomic techniques suggests that a low dietary ω6:ω3 fatty acids ratio could enhance the cellular defense mechanisms against increased stresses and in particular oxidative stress, during gestation and lactation, as reflected in proteomic changes of haptoglobin, alpha-1 antitrypsin and APCS (serum amyloid P -component. Furthermore, significant differences between plasma proteomic profiles at the end of pregnancy and during lactation were revealed for the first time. These results reflect an adaptation of the animal to the physiological changes that occur during reproduction.
Researchers from the Universities of Glasgow, Milan, Vietnam National Agricultural University and the MedILS in Croatia participated in the study. Acuvet Biotech collaborated by performing the acute phase protein analysis by ELISA. The results obtained with our tests allowed us to validate the results of the proteomic techniques, showing a high correlation with them.
